This morphology unit will help build students' vocabulary with Greek and Latin roots and affixes. Students who have an expansive vocabulary will be able to read quickly and with more accuracy, as well as determine the meaning of unknown words. One way to build students' vocabulary and reading skills is through explicit instruction and word study activities with Greek and Latin roots and affixes. These weekly morphology word study activities focus on five Greek and Latin roots and/or affixes to help students increase their vocabulary and transfer learning to decode unknown words.
Why Morphology?
Morphology is the study of words and their parts. Morphemes - Greek and Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes, and base words - are the smallest units of meaning. A strong understanding of morphology helps students with phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension. Morphology word study and vocabulary instruction unlocks the structures and meanings within words.
These weekly morphology word study activities teach vocabulary through Greek and Latin roots and affixes. Each weekly unit will introduce, teach, review, and practice Greek and Latin roots and affixes!
